The BWS 50cc uses a 2-stroke air-cooled vertical engine produced by Motori Minarelli. The Yamaha BWS features 10 inch wheels and chunky tyres in conjunction with a solid bodywork and chassis design making the BWS capable of coping with some rougher terrain also making the BWS appealing to people living in less urban areas. The BWS is the original competition for Piaggio's Typhoon, Peugeot's Trekker and Gilera's Stalker.
