Gilera started producing the DNA in 2000.
Gilera's intention with the DNA was to offer the handling capabilities and riding style of a small sports bike whilst offering the features of a twist and go scooter making it appealing to many. The DNA 50 featured a 50cc liquid-cooled 2-stroke long HI-PER2 engine produced by Piaggio. The DNA was also produced with a 125cc and 180cc engine. The 125cc and 180cc engines are both 4-stroke single cylinder liquid-cooled LEADER engines produced by Piaggio. DNAs use 14 inch wheels in conjunction with front and rear hydraulic disc brakes.
